For months, Dolly Parton’s fans knew that something was not quite right.
There were postponed appearances, canceled performances and occasional comments about health issues. Yet Dolly continued to sound unmistakably like herself — hopeful, determined and already talking about the projects she still wanted to finish.

“She didn’t want a lot of the family worried about it,” Stella explained, adding that some of those closest to Dolly knew what was happening, but not every relative did.
For anyone familiar with the Parton family story, that detail carries unusual weight.
Dolly was one of 12 children, and family remained central to her identity long after she left the Smoky Mountains and became one of the biggest stars in entertainment.

According to Stella, the reason was remarkably consistent with the Dolly millions of people believed they knew.

In October 2025, Dolly’s sister Freida publicly asked people to pray for her after Dolly postponed her Las Vegas residency because of health concerns.

Fans wondered whether Dolly’s condition was far more serious than anyone had been told.
Stella now believes Dolly probably told Freida to keep things quieter after that request became public.
Not because Dolly was angry that her sister cared, but because she did not want her private health situation becoming a source of fear for millions of people.
Stella recalled the attitude as essentially: don’t go telling everyone my business.
Freida later explained that her request had simply come from concern and from the way the sisters had been raised — when someone was struggling, they prayed.
But looking back now, that moment appears to have been one of the earliest signs that the family itself was trying to navigate the boundary Dolly had created between her illness and the outside world.
And even near the end, Dolly apparently remained focused on other people.
Stella has recalled her sister saying that, if there was no hope for her personally, she would still be willing to participate in experimental drug treatments if doing so might help doctors learn something that could benefit others in the future.
It is a remarkable detail.
Even while facing her own mortality, Dolly was still thinking beyond herself.
That same instinct defined much of her life outside music.
Through the Imagination Library, charitable projects and countless quieter acts of generosity, Dolly spent decades directing attention and resources toward people she might never personally meet.
In the end, however, there was one thing she asked for herself.
During one of Stella’s final conversations with her sister, Dolly made a simple request.
Prayer.
“The last thing Dolly asked me for was prayer,” Stella revealed.
There was no dramatic goodbye attached to it.
No elaborate final statement intended for the public.
Just one sister asking another sister to pray.
That detail makes the secrecy surrounding Dolly’s illness feel less mysterious and more deeply personal.
