Barry Gibb: Robin and I fought to the end - but it all means nothing now

Robin Gibb, the angelic tenor and co-founder of the Bee Gees, will forever be remembered for his haunting vibrato, emotional depth, and musical genius that helped shape the soundtrack of a generation. But behind the glittering success of “Stayin’ Alive,” “How Deep Is Your Love,” and “I Started a Joke”, Robin endured a devastating and highly publicized health battle in the final years of his life — one marked by courage, quiet suffering, and resilience.

In 2010, Robin was first diagnosed with colon cancer, which later spread to his liver. The diagnosis shocked fans, as the singer had continued to work and appear publicly, though noticeably thinner and more frail. His condition was further complicated by pneumonia and a series of serious setbacks, including kidney failure during his chemotherapy treatments.

In April 2012, Robin fell into a coma, and for several harrowing days, his family feared the worst. But in a moment that stunned even his doctors, he briefly woke up, recognized his wife Dwina and son Robin-John, and even communicated through gestures. It was seen as a miracle moment, and fans worldwide held their breath in hope.

Sadly, despite his extraordinary will to live, Robin’s condition deteriorated. On May 20, 2012, he passed away at the age of 62 in London, surrounded by his family.

Throughout his illness, Robin remained remarkably private and composed, determined not to be defined by his suffering. He continued to work on musical projects — including a classical piece commemorating the Titanic — until his final months, determined to keep creating despite unimaginable physical setbacks.

His death marked the second tragic loss in the Bee Gees trio, following the early passing of Maurice Gibb in 2003. For surviving brother Barry Gibb, Robin’s death was like losing a twin soul — someone he had sung with since childhood, their voices forever interwoven in harmony and memory.

Robin Gibb’s legacy is more than just the voice behind timeless hits. It’s the story of an artist who fought quietly but fiercely, who refused to give up, and who left the world not only with unforgettable music — but with an example of resilience in the face of pain.

Even in his final battle, Robin Gibb reminded the world: he wasn’t just singing to survive — he was singing to live.
