Country music is preparing for one of its biggest nights of remembrance since the death of Dolly Parton, and the Country Music Association has chosen a title that immediately tells fans just how emotional the evening is expected to be.
On September 16, CMA officially announced a two-hour live television event honoring Dolly’s extraordinary life and career. The program will be called “CMA Presents I Will Always Love You: A Celebration of Dolly Parton,” borrowing its name from one of the most famous songs Dolly ever wrote. The special will air live on Wednesday, October 21, from 9:00 to 11:00 p.m. ET on ABC and Disney+, with streaming available on Hulu the following day.
For longtime fans, the title alone carries enormous emotional weight.
Dolly originally wrote “I Will Always Love You” in the early 1970s as a farewell to her longtime musical partner Porter Wagoner when she decided to leave his television show and pursue the next stage of her career. Decades later, Whitney Houston transformed the song into a global pop phenomenon, but the words always remained unmistakably Dolly’s: a goodbye filled not with bitterness, but gratitude, affection, and the willingness to let someone go while still loving them.
Now those same words have been chosen to frame an entire evening saying goodbye to Dolly herself.
According to CMA, the two-hour special will combine live performances, archival footage, and personal stories tracing Dolly’s journey from the mountains of East Tennessee to becoming one of the most recognizable entertainers and philanthropists in American history. The event will be filmed live at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Belmont University in Nashville, a venue that already holds an important connection to Dolly’s later creative work.
Belmont hosted the 2025 world premiere of DOLLY: A True Original Musical, and Dolly also partnered with the university on DOLLY U, an educational initiative designed to give students practical experience in entertainment, media, and creative industries. Bringing the tribute back to that same location adds another layer of meaning to the night.
The announcement comes only weeks after Dolly died on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80. Her death triggered an extraordinary wave of tributes from country singers, Hollywood stars, family members, longtime friends, and fans around the world. Artists including Reba McEntire, Carrie Underwood, Miley Cyrus, George Strait, Willie Nelson, Luke Bryan, and many others publicly remembered the woman who had influenced their lives and careers.
CMA now appears determined to bring that grief together in one place.
CMA CEO Sarah Trahern said Dolly belonged to the entire world but was fundamentally born from country music, adding that the industry owes her a debt of gratitude that words cannot repay. She described the tribute as CMA’s way of saying thank you on behalf of artists, industry members, and fans who found part of themselves in Dolly’s music.
Executive producer Robert Deaton expressed a similar sentiment, saying the goal is to do justice to Dolly’s story, music, and the people who loved her. He described the project not simply as another television special, but as an attempt to create the tribute his friend deserved.
That personal connection may be important.
Dolly was not merely someone CMA honored after her death. She had been part of the organization’s history for decades. She earned nine CMA Awards, won Entertainer of the Year in 1978, and received the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. Her first CMA win dated back to 1968, when she and Porter Wagoner were honored together.
In other words, the October special will not simply celebrate a famous artist from outside the organization.
It will honor someone whose career ran alongside much of CMA’s own history.
That makes the choice of “I Will Always Love You” feel even more deliberate.
The song began as Dolly’s way of ending one chapter while honoring what had come before it. Nearly six decades later, those same words have become the title of a national farewell to the woman who wrote them.

CMA says additional details — including performers, tickets, and participating partners — will be revealed in the coming weeks. That means fans still do not know which artists will take the stage, which Dolly songs will be performed, or whether some of the singers closest to her will participate.
That uncertainty may only increase anticipation.

CMA says the special will celebrate Dolly as an artist, songwriter, entertainer, humanitarian, and entrepreneur, using archival material and personal stories to tell the broader story of a woman whose influence stretched from Nashville and Hollywood to Dollywood and the Imagination Library. Disney is also supporting the Imagination Library as part of the broader celebration, continuing the literacy mission that became one of Dolly’s most important legacies.
For fans who are still adjusting to a country music world without Dolly Parton, October 21 may be difficult to watch.
But it may also provide something many have been waiting for since August.
A chance for Nashville to stop.
A chance for the artists she inspired to sing her songs.
And a chance for millions of people who never met Dolly but still felt connected to her to say goodbye together.
The final lineup remains a mystery.
The performances have not been revealed.
But CMA has already chosen the words that will hang over the entire evening.
