Richard Sterban Reveals Pancreatic Cancer Diagnosis, Vows to Fight
September 25, 2025 — Richard Sterban, the legendary bass vocalist of The Oak Ridge Boys, has publicly revealed that he has been battling pancreatic cancer since March of this year. The 81-year-old singer shared the news in a heartfelt statement, expressing both gratitude and optimism as he undergoes treatment.
“I am under the care of the best cancer doctors in the country and, with the help of the Good Lord above, I believe I will be able to get through this,” Sterban said. “I want to thank everyone, especially the fans, for your concern, and I would appreciate your continued prayers.”
Despite the seriousness of his diagnosis, Sterban noted that he is feeling well most days and hopes to return to the stage in the coming months.
Sterban, whose deep bass vocals helped define The Oak Ridge Boys’ sound on hits like the chart-topping “Elvira,” has been a cornerstone of the group since 1972. Prior to joining the quartet, he performed with J.D. Sumner and the Stamps Quartet, notably touring and recording with Elvis Presley.
His last public performance with the group was at the Academy of Country Music Awards in May 2025. Since then, Aaron McCune and Tim Duncan have filled in during The Oak Ridge Boys’ ongoing tour.
Over the decades, Sterban and his fellow Oak Ridge Boys—Joe Bonsall, William Lee Golden, and Duane Allen—formed one of the most iconic and enduring lineups in country and gospel music. Their accolades include five Grammy Awards, two American Music Awards, nine GMA Dove Awards, and inductions into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
The group suffered another major loss earlier this year when longtime member Joe Bonsall passed away on July 9, 2024, at age 76.
As fans across the globe send their support, Sterban remains hopeful and determined to recover. His announcement is yet another reminder of the strength and legacy of The Oak Ridge Boys, whose music continues to resonate through generations.
